Is that a variation on comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable?
Fits you to a T.
It does fit well, doesn’t it?
John….. I like that 😉 I thought it was just misbehavior, though
Actually it’s an old definition of a good preacher.
My management plumbline, back in the day, was formed by a Confucian anecdote…
Someone asked the Master “What do you think of the leader who is feared and hated by everyone in the community?”
He replied, “That is not enough.”
“Then what of the leader who is loved and respected by everyone?”
“That, too, is not enough,” the Master said. “The ideal leader is one who is loved and respected by all the good people in the community, but feared and hated by all the bad people.”
This is remarkably easy to do as a blogger. You have discovered this already. All you need to worry about is clarity and consistency in your own thinking, free from the need to serve any particular peer group.
I am beginning to be of the opinion that you are a very wise man, John… I hope not because you gave me a kind comment;) Actually …. the more I read of your thoughts the more impressed I am. Not that this is static, you understand, but it isn’t fickle either.
We do wish for that balance of justice and charity, in ourselves and in our society. thanks for sharing the anecdote.
