That is one powerful four letter word. Linked together with the heart, “Home is where the heart is”, it speaks of everything we hold most dear. Home is where we understand we have a role and are understood, and which we understand, as well. Although most often considered a part of our native experience, it may be that we have settled in somewhere quite far from those beginnings and the people which might once have laid claim to being “Home” to us. Our hearts may have found a place elsewhere than those first experienced. Because home originates within us, it is the place we settle into and feel comfortable with, among those we have chosen to give our most loyal affection.

So “Sweet Home Alabama” can mean home to us if we have no connections to the actual place of Alabama- Alabama might be foreign and unknown to us, but the sentiment of someplace where we know we belong, whose accents are the same we speak, which speak back to us. Some of us found it, some of us are searching: for that place we call home.

Home might be a gathering of common principles, where we speak the same language of moral givens, or common ground which makes us a tribe or a nation. It might be something far more transcendent of all the commonly held ties.

For those having Heaven as their home, there is a real connection they are looking for and recognize. The home here consists of shared sense of that Heavenly home, of its relations, and loyalties, of the hopes and promises, the choices and the priorities. Like all sense of home there is an inner peacefulness when the actions harmonize in the methods and goals; when those belonging are turned in the same direction. The Psalms pictured it this way:

Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.
How good and pleasant it is
when brothers live together in unity!

It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down upon the collar of his robes.

It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the LORD bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.

All other concepts of home will follow in this pattern. A unity and a relationship, both must be incorporated into a place that is “home” to us. It isn’t a demand for a lack of struggle or even disagreement along the way, but it has greater, stronger ties that bind us and confirm our commitment together.

And think how good it feels when you come home. Think of the place in your heart where nothing touches you so much as that longing satisfied… a place where you belong and that belongs to you.

Home is more than a house. A nation is more than a place. A church is more than activities and buildings. Heaven is more than a hope.

Let’s make a home and go to our home. Let’s make our home a place that welcomes, but is protected, and cherished. A place loved and respected, where we love and respect.

Our Home Sweet Home.
