Actually, I think I will have some helpful hints for Christmastime. Today that most helpful things I can tell you are to relax and enjoy the people around you. If you haven’t cleaned it up by now, it’s probably too late without wearing yourself out. When you cook, enjoy the process, you would be surprised how good plain old fashioned cooking can be. It’s all right to fancy things up, but people are mainly interested in the combination: plenty of simple well-cooked food, pleasant atmosphere, a feeling of welcome, and laughter.

I never quite get used to how much it means to people to be bold about taking some time for God. Sometimes it has seemed a little forced, but I usually have a grateful response from those who have participated in the time we take for God. I attribute it to the Lord’s presence, but additionally it is the fact that there is so little of the Lord’s company in our modern culture that people get starved for it. Then, it is like a cool drink for a thirsty man when someone has the audacity to ‘bring church home’. Well, that’s a bit dramatic, but, you know.

You have to carve time out in the lulls for that. If you do too much right before the main meal it gets lost in the press of serving and eating… and recovery. But however you fit in thanksgiving, it is something worthwhile. We have this tradition of passing around kernals of popcorn, saying a few words about the Pilgims, then each person is supposed to think of something they are thankful for for each kernal.

Get the turkey in the oven as early as possible. Lovingly baste it. I have some menus for the holidays online, if you are interested. Wow, that is an old page- maybe I’ll do some update sometime….
