You wouldn’t know it, but I am fairly polite in person. I was raised that way and old habits die hard. I came across this article on some modern additions to the Miss Manners/Emily Post ideals of what makes society run smoothly.
At The Street dot com they ask “Is Etiquette a Core Value?” “and cover the rules such as how far to stand when speaking on a cell phone-“stand two arm’s lengths away from others”.
I didn’t know that! Of course I don’t really have to know that because I am a natural ‘space’ person…. I like plenty of personal space and I don’t like speaking on cell phones in company unless absolutely pressed….. I tend to move to privacy. But these things are good to know.
The other tips:
cell phones are noise pollution, minimize and turn off ( rules apply in libraries, too)
avoid keying in lowercase
spell-check and grammar-check are good manners for email.
if you’re early, you’re on time, and if you’re on time, you’re late.
The statement is made, “people have more money than time”. I think both can be at a premium, and people appreciate it when you aren’t wasting theirs.
This public service announcement is over.
